A famous surgeon, Bell pioneered the treatment of ulcers and inflammations of the joints, fractures and dislocations. This was his first professional work, which brought him fame. He used tubes of lead and silver for purposes of drainage (see Baas, Joh. Hermann, “Outlines of the history of medicine and the medical profession,” New York 1910, p. 675). The appendix contains accounts of the treatment of ringworm and a treatise on the benefits and disadvantages of injections. The translator, Santiago Garcia, was physician to the Spanish Royal Family.
