COCHRANE, Thomas (Earl of Dundonald) Narrative of services in the liberation of Chili, Peru, and Brazil, from Spanish and Portuguese domination. London James Ridgway 1859
2 vols. 8vo. I: (1) f., xxii, 293 pp.; II: xi (1 blank), 305 pp. Publisher’s original blue cloth (slightly worn and rubbed).
Though perhaps exaggerated in British accounts based on this work, which was written some 35 years after the events took place, Cochrane and other British naval officers, entirely unofficially, made a considerable contribution to the cause of South American independence. Vol. I is concerned with the liberation of Peru and Chile, and Vol. 2 with that of Brazil. Bookplate of the Earl of Ellesmere in Vol. 2. Borba de Moraes I, 274. Sabin 21274, “a small edition only printed.”
