The author‘s travels took him to Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Mexico. He analyses the economic and political situation of each country, with interesting observations, and adds letters written to the Portuguese government giving vivid descriptions of his travels between them. He served as Special Envoy on official missions in the South American republics, negotiating several international treaties to further Portuguese commercial interests, and established consular services in South America.
