Efforts were made in late 19th century Brazil to further education among the less privileged. The Sociedade Propagadora da Instrução às Classes Operárias da Freguesia da Lagoa offered instruction to both adults and children, in day and evening classes. As First Secretary of the Society, the author complains of lack of funds and of qualified staff. He suggests cancelling the day classes, but points out that they had that year attracted 95 pupils, including a Negress, a widow aged 38 who, though timid at first, was encouraged by her teachers and now came regularly to classes. The work lists the donations received that year, sets out the accounts and lists both day and evening pupils who should receive prizes. The pupils, totalling 181, of whom two were slaves, were drawn from all sections of working class occupations and were mostly children and mainly Brazilian, but included Germans, Portuguese, an Italian, a Spaniard, a Paraguayan and a North American. Not in Sacramento Blake.
