Small 8vo. 216 pp. Quarter cloth.

The work reproduces laws and decrees in force relating to limited companies and banks. D. Pedro II’s abdication in 1889 and Brazil’s declaration as a Republic caused little financial uncertainty; coffee cultivation was thriving and accounted for more than 50% of the export market. However, “in the midst of a wild boom in company flotations Ruy Barbosa at the Treasury granted concession after con-cession to new banks, who were given generous rights of note issue backed either by gold or government bonds . . . One by one the props which had maintained the Brazilian exchanges at their previous high level were knocked away. To the mistrust engendered by such a mass of paper was added the uneasiness occasioned by the outbreak of revolutionary movements . . Before the end of 1892 the movement of foreign capital into Brazil had been halted and reversed . .” (David Joslin, A century of banking in Latin America, p. 155). Born in Pernambuco, the author was a magistrate and lawyer in Rio de Janeiro, and wrote extensively on legal matters. Pp. discoloured due to the quality of the paper. Sacramento Blake VI, 96 (this edition). Innocêncio XVI, p. 221, lists the 2nd edition of 1885 only.
