The book prompted a famous literary controversy, as the author disproved arguments about the highly contentious legendary origins of Portugal put forward by Bernardo de Brito in his Monarchia Lusitana. Innocêncio asserts that his motive was jealousy as Bernardo de Brito had been appointed chief chronicler, a post which Paiva de Andrade wanted for himself.
