Fide, 1671

8vo. 80ff. (including the final leaf of errata). Woodcut emblem of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide on title-page, light spotting, in contemporary vellum.

Second edition of this fierce attack on Calvinism by the eminent Greek savant Caryophilos (died 1639). Born in Corfu, he studied in Rome, returned to Corfu for a while and then returned to Rome where he taught in the same college in which he had been a pupil. He entered into the empoyment of, successively, Cardinals Pietro Aldobrandini, Lodovico Ludovisio and Francesco Barberini, all of them nephews of popes, and the second of whom procured for him the archbishopric of Iconium. He wrote a large number of works and ‘edited’ the spurious letters of Themistocles.
