CERRATO, Paolo De virginitate libri III. Paris Simonem Colineum 1528
8vo. 28ff. Woodcut device on title-page, a GOOD COPY in early twentieth century vellum.
Only edition of one of two books by this author, born and died in Alba (1485-1541). This is a neo-latin poem in hexameters in three books almost all of which deals with virginity in classical times. Cerrato studied classics in his native town, probably under Domenico Nanni, author of the Poliantea, but finished his education in Pavia where he graduated in law. In 1508 he published his Epithalamion in Turin to celebrate the wedding of the marchese del Monferrato, Guglielmo Paleologo, to Anne d’Alençon, reprinted later at Basel. On his return to Alba in 1536 he was appointed an administrator of the Ospedale dei pellegrini to which, on his death, he left a considerable sum of money. Giulio Cesare Scaligero said of the above work that it deserved to be placed beside the works of Bembo, Fracastoro and Pontano. Not in Adams; RLIN locates only the copy at Folger.
