FIRST EDITION, second issue, of this rappresentazione set in Jerusalem in 629 on the occasion of the Emperor Heraclius’ defeat of the Persian King Chosroes II and the return of the True Cross to Jerusalem whence it had been carried off by Chosroes some ten years earlier. In the dedication to Niccolo Tornabuoni, Bishop of San Sepolchro, Baccio Cecchi, the author’s son, refers to Tornabuoni’s friendship with his father and informs us that Giovanni Maria (1518-1587) wrote the play towards the end of his life.
