BIENATO, Aurelio In elegantiarum sex libros Laurentii Vallae disertissimi epithomata nuper recognita. Venice Melchiorrem Sessam 1531

8vo. 72ff. Title within an attractive woodcut border of putti, birds, grotesques and masks and incorporating the Sessa cat in the top compartment, woodcut device on last page, in modern boards.

Second edition of Aurelio Bienato’s scholarly explanation of the grammar and vocabulary used by Lorenzo Valla in his Elegantiarum opus. The author (born at Milan towards the midde of the fifteenth cerntury) wrote on grammar (a little volume that went through several sixteenth century editions), composed a funeral elegy for Lorenzo de’Medici and, for a short time, was Bishop of Martirano, near Catanzaro. The border round the title in this work very closely resembles that of Petrarch’s Le vite de gli uomini illustri, 1527 (Sander 5597) except with the Sessa cat replacing an eagle in the top compartment.Censimento CNCE 6054; Rava 1007a; not in BMC, Adams or RLIN.
