4to. 112ff. Woodcut device on title-page, numerous examples of woodcut music, several full-page, lower (blank) fore-corner of L4 neatly cut away, in nineteenth century vellum gilt, gilt edges

Fifth edition of this important and valuable book, first printed in 1564, which deals in the greatest detail with the ceremonies to be observed in the creating of cardinals and the ordination of bishops in the Catholic Church. The author, according to the preface of Francesco Mucanzio to Cardinal Otto Troches in which he states that his maternal grandfather found the original manuscript in his library and caused it to be printed, was the Master of Ceremonies at the papal courts of Julius II and Leo X (and probably Adrian VI and Clement VII).
