GRATAROLO, Bongianni L’Altea, tragedia Venice, per Francesco Marcolini, 1556

8vo. 48ff. (including he final blank). Woodcut device on title-page and at end, a few woodcut initials, A GOOD COPY in modern acceptable limp vellum.

Only edition of Gratarolo’s first play, written in blank verse but with verses that end with two unaccented syllables, a form criticised by Quadrio as ‘ritmo privo affatto di splendore e di noblità’, but praised to the skies by the author in his dedication to conte Camillo Capriolo . The play, a mythological piece of no great account, was the author’s first work, his other two plays, according to Casali, being greatly superior. His L’Astianatte was chosen by Scipione Maffei to be included in his Scelta di XII Tragedie per uso della scena, Verona, 1723. Apart from his three plays he also wrote a history of his home land, Storia della Riviera di Salò, Brescia, 1599.Censimento CNCE 21648; Casali 110; Clubb 481; not in Adams
