FLAVIO, Giovanni Paolo Oratio in funere Pauli IIII…Romae habita IIII. Non. Septemb. M.D.LIX Naples, ex officina Matthiae Cancer, 1560

4to. 8ff. In modern wrappers.

Only edition of this funeral oration for Flavio’s patron, Paul IV, probably the century’s most unpopular pope. The author - humanist, scholar and writer - was born in Alvito near Frosinone in 1520 and studied at the University of Naples where he later became professor. A favourite of the pope who dubbed him cavaliere, he was chosen by him to pronounce the oration following the signing of the Treaty of Cateau Cambrésis. Paolo Manuzio said of him ‘Un maestro e un duce quale Flavio, che con nuova e mirabilissima arte ti ritrae dagli errori del volgo e agevolmente ti guida, per diritto cammino, a quell’insigne splendore dell’antico idioma romano che pochi, o forse nessuno, possono raggiungere anche a costo di veglie e di grandissime fatiche’.CNCE 19248 (5 copies); Manzi: Annali di Mattia Cancer, 117; not in BMC, Adams, RLIN, or OCLC
