DIONYSIUS Periegetes De situ orbis…Graece scriptum. Idem in Latinitatē à Rhemnio grammatico translatū...In idem, Coelij Calcagnini annotatiunculae, Basel (apud Valentinum Curionem, September 1522)
Second separate edition of Dionysius’ poem describing the geography of the known world in some 1,200 elegant hexameters. There has been much discussion concerning the era and native country of the author (also surnamed Afer); but it is now generally recognised that he was an African who lived at the time of Hadrian. The work enjoyed much popularity in ancient times, primarily for school use and in the present copy the first twenty pages contain an interlinear Latin translation with marginal notes by a contemporary student. The first edition, also containing a Latin translation ny Rhemnius Fannius, appeared in Ferrara ten years previously.Adams D644; Hoffmann I, p.591
8vo. 62ff. Title within woodcut Lucretia border, device on last page, a little worming in a few blank fore-margins, some light staining, in contemporary limp vellum, a little discoloured and worn.
