CARLO EMANUELE I Duca di Savoia – Relatione di quello ch’e passato dopo’l ritorno di S.A. da Spagna in Provenza [Italy, c.1592, watermark of a crossbow, closely related to Briquet 728-30 and probably late sixteenth century Venetian]
An account of the actions of the Duke of Savoy in Provence in 1592, following his landing in Marseille after having sailed from Spain. The details in the manuscript are almost entirely military and deal with skirmishes between the League’s forces under the command of the duke and the protestants around Aix, Brignolles, Gardane and Berre. This is one of the last campaigns of the French Wars of Religion as Henri IV renounced his protestant faith in the following year, thus bringing about the cessation of hostilities and the collapse of all opposition to him. Carlo Emanuele (1562-1630) succeeded his father as duke in 1582. His life was one long series of intrigues and warfare, none of which brought him any benefit. During his life he fought the French, the Spaniards, the Swiss and many of his Italian neighbours. He died, leaving Savoy almost bankrupt, and loathed by his subjects and his neighbours.PROVENANCE: From the collection of Sir Peter Wroth (fl.1643), parliamentarian and collector of manuscripts, with his initials PW in black ink on the first page.
