First edition in German - the earliest translation of Malthus' Essay on the Principle of Population into a foreign language, printed in a small town near Hamburg. The translator was Franz Hermann Hegewisch (1783-1865), a doctor of medicine. This translation had important repercussions. In Austria and the German states it led to practical Malthusianism which lasted into the Bismark era and beyond, until the Weimar constitution of 1919.
