RICARDO,David Proposals for an Economical and Secure Currency; with Observations on the Profits of the Bank of England as they regard the Public and the Proprietors of Bank Stock. Third Edition. London John Murray 1819

Octavo, quarter blue morocco and boards, spine lettered gilt, (1) + 128pp

Third edition, contains some changes from the second edition in punctuation and capitalisation, which appear to have been made by the printer rather than the author. Written at the suggestion of Pascoe Grenfell, Ricardo’s most important proposal was to make bank notes exchangeable not for gold coins but for standard bars of gold bullion. The scheme was adopted in 1819 in Peel’s Act for the resumption of cash payments, but was abandoned later on account of an outbreak of forged notes. Kress C403. Goldsmith 22493. Sraafa 4c.
