Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714) with this book wrote the first systematic treatise on occupational diseases. Ramazzini methodically collected material relating to diseases of manual workers and the relation to their occupations. It deals with pneumoconiosis and other diseases of miners, with lead poisoning in potters, with silicosis in stonemasons, diseases among metal workers as well as diseases of gilders, printers and even doctors. It was translated into English in 1705 under the title A Treatise of the diseases of Tradesmen. Ramazzini, who was professor of medicine at Padua and Modena, was the first to recognise the social significance of occupational diseases and this book earned him the title of ‘the father of industrial hygiene’. An attractive, large copy, entirely uncut.
