EACH DIARY IS FULL HAVING ENTRIES ON ALMOST EVERY PAGE GIVING DETAILS OF THE LIFE OF JETHRO BROWN OF MIDDLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS. MR. BROWN STARTS EACH DAY ENTRY WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE WEATHER REFLECTING A TIME WHEN LIFE SO DEPENDED ON THE SEASONS AND WEATHER FOR MERE SURVIVAL. MR. BROWN SUPPORTED HIMSELF AND HIS FAMILY BY CUTTING LOGS AND FIREWOOD, AND DOING LABOR AS A GENERAL HANDYMAN -- SHOVELING SNOW, DIGGING DRAINAGE DITCHES, PICKING APPLES, PEARS, BLUEBERRIES, AND SELLING CHICKEN EGGS. BESIDE THE DAILY ENTRIES OF LIFE, THERE ARE ENTRIES OF ACCOUNTING - MONIES TAKEN IN AND PAID FOR SUPPLIES. AS YOU READ, YOU WILL SEE NAMES REPEATED TIME AND TIME AGAIN: ISAACK THOMPSON, L. WASHBORNE, DR. COMSTOCK, ISAACK VAUGN, MRS. WARREN, SADIE NUTT, AND GEORGE BROWN TO NAME A FEW. HERE ARE A FEW EXCERPTS: "Sarah married this morning and left with her husband." "The weather still fair and cold with wind full from N.W." "Heard of a home murder in Hallifax." "Shoveling snow all through noon for self & Dr. Comstock. ...about 8 or 10 inches of snow fell." "Cut 1 pile of wood making 40 piles above the road. 4 of them belong to me. Worked rest of today for Mrs. Warren trimming grape vines." "Have done very little today. Have a sore hand that troubles me a good deal." From entry on 12/24/85: "Fair and mild all day. Cooler this evening. Wind the evening from S.W. to N.W. This is my birthday. 79 years old but still well and rugged for my years. How many more years I am to see is one of the unknowables." From entry on 12/24/89: "Cloudy all day but very moderate wind - S.W. This is my 83 birthday. A birth of days very few attain to well."
