BARROW, Sir John Sketches of the Royal Society and Royal Society Club. London, John Murray 1849

8vo. vi + (ii) + 212pp, litho copy of part of a letter to Barrow from the daughter of Charles Hatchett. With a presentation inscription from John Barrow the younger to the Admiralty Library and a ms note stating, “This book was printed privately after the death of my father”. Boards. John Barrow, was a close friend of Sir Joseph Banks and under his auspices became a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the Royal Society Club. On the death of Charles Hatchett in 1847, he inherited the title, “Father” of the Club. Between this date and his own death in November 1848, he wrote this useful and interesting work, which contains short biographies of some of his own distinguished contemporaries, notably Banks, Wollaston, Davy, Henry Cavendish, Davies Gilbert, Thomas Young and the sculptor, Francis Chantrey, some written with the immediacy of first-hand knowledge. Since the book was published posthumously, there is also a brief biography of Barrow himself, who had a distinguished career as Secretary to the Admiraly and explorer. Included in this copy of a litho copy of a letter written to Barrow, and transcribed by him, by Mrs. Brande, daughter of Charles Hatchett. The letter is also reprinted within the body of the text.
