(BOULTON, Matthew) Report from the committee appointed to enquire into the state of the copper mines and copper trade of this Kingdom. (London) 7th May, 1799

Small folio. 176pp. Stitched as issued, outer wrappers grubby. When a bill came before Parliament at the very end of the 18th century, proposing to give to the East India Co. an exclusive right to export copper and at the same time allowing imports free of duty, the great Birmingham manufacturers and the Cornish miners petitioned against it. This is the report of the resulting parliamentary committee and it consists wholly of the evidence taken from those most closely involved, amongst whom are Matthew Boulton, John Vivian (vice-warden of the Stannaries) and Andrew Vivian, Trevithick’s partner and cousin, giving much first-hand information on the running of the industry and the close connection between miners and manufacturers.
