DODD, Ralph Report and estimate on the improvement of Blue and Mile towns, Sheerness. London, 1801
8vo. 8pp. Plan (in facsimile). Boards. Not in Skempton. Not listed in the British Library catalogue. A rare report looking at ways to improve the state of these two hamlets, now long absorbed into Sheerness itself, but in those days still independent places “situated in a marsh below the level of spring high tides, with neither sewers nor drains to take off the filth, soil, and impure water used in culinary and domestic purposes”. Dodd urges the building of sewers and drains followed by proper street paving and lighting. He recommends the construction of a water-supply system using hydraulic pumps and elevated tanks, which could also be used for watering the dockyard. These improvements and others are recommended so that the towns may serve as a comfortable retreat for sailors wounded in the French wars. Alas, its plan is in facsimile and the book priced accordingly.
