COOPER, Theodore General specifications for the construction of a stiffened suspension bridge over the Hudson River at New York City. March 1895
8vo. 10pp, 2 large and folding litho plts. Orig. printed wrappers, worn. First leaf damaged. Presentation inscription from Cooper. Preserved in pamphlet case. Specifications for what would have been a spectacular steel-wire cable railway suspension bridge with the very long main span of 3100 feet. Designed by Cooper, one of the foremost bridge builders of late 19th-century America, the bridge would have crossed the Hudson River between 59th and 69th Streets, carrying six parallel tracks. It was not, however, built and this stretch of the river remained uncrossed until the building of Ammann's George Washington Bridge, which carries road, not rail, traffic.
