(BRUNLEES & McKENON) Bristol Port and Channel Dock, Avonmouth. Bristol, March 1877
Litho map, mounted on linen, 31 x 41ins., folding down into orig. cloth folder. Stamps of "Great Western Railway. Engineers Office, Paddington" on back of map. An excellent example. Avonmouth Dock was finally opened in February 1877 and this map was issued a month later. It shows the 16 acre dock with its entrance channel and lock and marks the proposed graving dock and the site of various dockside warehouses. It also gives a plan of the embryonic town of Avonmouth, though only three small streets of houses had then been built, and a plan showing the rail connections. It also gives details of dimensions, depth of water and so on. The dock, which was only built after years of controversy, was the achievement of the engineer, Sir James Brunlees, though the construction of a work of such magnitude was not without its problems.
