DATCHET CANAL Reasons in favor [sic] of the Datchet Canal. nd. but 1811

4to. 3 + (1)pp incl. docket title and small plan. Originally folded. Docket sheet and edge of first page discoloured. Once the Kennet & Avon Canal had opened in 1810 after which its shareholders turned their attention to bypassing the Thames between Maidenhead and London, where the navigation was difficult. The Datchet Canal was one of three schemes they put forward. The idea of such a canal had first surfaced at about the time the K&A Co. got its act but was revived in 1811. The present item promotes the Datchet Canal, the advantages of which included the fact that two thirds of it would pass over common and waste land, which meant that landowners would not be demanding a high price for their property. There is a small map, which also marks the line of another of the K&A schemes, the Reading Canal and shows how these two lengths of waterway would connect up with the Grand Junction Canal near Brentford. A very rare item.
