GREEN, John & Benjamin Bridge from Newcastle to Gateshead, at a high level. Prospectus. nd (c.1836)

Small folio. 4pp incl. engraved plan and elevation. During the 1830s, the coming rail link between London and Edinburgh focussed attention on crossing the River Tyne at Newcastle, and it became apparent that a road as well as a railway bridge at high level over the gorge would be needed. This rare prospectus describes and illustrates the laminated timber bridge designed by the Greens at the request of the Great North of England railway board. It was of the same geometric form as the two railway bridges at Ouseburn and Willington Dean, but since it only had to carry the relatively low loads of road vehicles they were able to design a dramatic structure with a very large main arch of 280 feet carried on masonry piers 100 feet above Spring tides. The road it was intended to carry ran from St.Nicholas Square to the Castle. A rare and lovely item.
