CHELTENHAM, OXFORD, AND LONDON JUNCTION RAILWAY Prospectus of the Cheltenham, Oxford, and London Junction railway, forming also a direct route between Cheltenham and Brighton, and Cheltenham and Dover. London, 1845

Folio. (4)pp incl. docket title. With folding litho plan 24 x 20ins. One of several schemes put forward for the Cheltenham-Oxford line, none of which was implemented because the area formed the arena of the gauge war between the GWR and the LNWR. This line, for which the engineers were Gandell & Brunton, was intended to run from the narrow-gauge Birmingham & Gloucester at Cheltenham via Didcot to a junction with the GWR at Maidenhead, with a branch to Oxford starting just south of Bampton. Although the question of gauge is not mentioned in the prospectus, many members of its provisional committee were directors of narrow-gauge railways. A rare item with a good map.
