(HUDSON, George) [SELKIRK, John ] Report of the discussion in the town council of Newcastle on Tyne, Wednesday, February 3, 1847, on the railways projected through the Team Valley by the Leeds and Thirsk, and York and Newcastle railway companies. Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Reported and printed by John Selkirk 1847
8vo. 47 + (1)pp. Stitched as issued. Ottley No.1378. Haskoll No.3829. Preserved in pamphlet case. The Team Valley linked the industrial areas of the rivers Tyne and Tees and represented a strategic route for George Hudson's York & Newcastle railway and also for the Leeds & Thirsk railway, both of which wished to build extensions to the south via Durham. Each company needed the support of Newcastle's town council in its application to Parliament and the present item is a record of the (very heated) discussion that took place at the council's quarterly meeting in early 1847. Although the meeting decided in favour of the L&T, which was intending to utilise part of the Clarence Railway, ultimately George Hudson was successful and it was his line which was built.
