MS copy of estimate. 6 + (2)pp incl. docket title. ALS 4to. 2pp. The final part of the additions to and re-structuring of Buckingham Palace, begun during the 1840s, was the provision of new kitchens and a ballroom. For this, as for the earlier work, Thomas Cubitt was the sole contractor. This ms copy of his estimate was sent by General Bowles, Comptroller of the Household, to Lord Seymour, First Commissioner of Woods and Works, and Bowles accompanying letter is also present. Cubitt's estimate contains a detailed description of the work he would carry out for the sum of £45,800 including the concrete foundations, the finishing in Bath stone of the exterior faces, the provision of fireproof floors, the alteration of ventilating shafts and even the lightning conductors. The plans on which he seems to have based his estimate were designed by Blore but as built the designs were those of Pennethorne, though Cubitt still carried out the work.
