Hannover, Hahn'sche Hof-Buchhandlung 1847

4to text vol, oblong folio atlas. xv + (i) + 136pp ; 28 litho plates. Orig. printed wrappers, text vol. unopened and uncut. Rather browned internally. Boxed. Concerned with the design of long-span arched timber roof trusses and laminated timber arches. Ardant carried out a series of tests on arches with spans of 40 feet, unprecedented in timber at this period, putting concentrated and distributed loads on them to failure and measuring the outward thrusts. From the results he was able to propose a method of design which became widely accepted. In his book, which describes and illustrates his tests, Ardant also describes the origin and history of the long-span timber arched truss, including the work of Palladio and Philibert de l’Orme. Finally, he applies his theory to some existing structures, notably Emy’s laminated timber arches, checking to see how they would react to snow and wind loads. Ardant was professor of architecture and construction at the Military Engineering School at Metz and his book was first published in French in 1840.
