Sawyer (stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in) in full green crushed levant morocco. Covers decoratively bordered in gilt with gilt stipple and leaf cornerpieces with red floral onlays. Front cover lettered in gilt in the border with the first two lines of Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard ( Full Many a Gem of Purest/Ray Serene/The Dark Unfathom d Caves of/Ocean Bear ) and with a central gilt monogram T.G. within a rectangular panel consisting of gilt stipple and leaf with red floral onlays enclosing a gilt laurel wreath. Spine decoratively lettered and paneled in gilt in compartments in a similar gilt stipple and leaf design with red morocco gilt floral onlays, board edges ruled in gilt, turn-ins decoratively tooled in gilt, brown morocco doublures, front doublure set with an oval portrait miniature on ivory under glass of Thomas Gray within a gilt frame in a sunken panel decoratively tooled in gilt and set with six pearls, cream-colored moire silk liners, all edges gilt. Armorial bookplates of Selden and Lynde on front free endpaper, armorial bookplate of Albert Henry Wiggin on front flyleaf. An exquisite example. Housed in the original green cloth clamshell case.
