He wrote a personal account of Hawthorne and later, this work which reflected his experiences as an officer in the navy. It is written in journal form and the author remarks that he was particularly interested in the progress of Liberia. Regarding this, he states that he is neutral--neither an abolitionist or a colonizationist. The areas he covers are: Cape Verds, Cape Mesurado, Cape Palmas, Monrovia, Liberia, Sinoe, Madeira, El Mina and Sierra Leone, among others.
Of particular interest to those interested in Africana, the pre-Civil War era, colonization, and African-American history.
