RARE FIRST EDITION, WELL ILLUSTRATED. As an acclaimed sculptor, draughtsman, and Egyptologist, Bonomi was uniquely equipped to write this popular history, which considers the capital of the Assyrian Empire primarily from the artistic and scriptural points of view.
In preparation, Bonomi carefully studied the remains in the British Museum and Louvre, the ground plans and layouts of the original structures, and the original placement of the friezes. He then pursued a systematic course through the chambers, examining the sculptures on the walls while consulting the scriptures.
Whether the line of reasoning adopted is erroneous or just, must be left to the decision of the reader, but though my inferences and conclusions may be questioned by many, it is hoped that the facts in the subject-matter will be interesting to all. [From the preface.]
