VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION. William Bateson is recognized as one of the great pioneers in the study of genetics, indeed it was he who coined the term. Building on the work of Gregor Mendel, the first to discover the idea of dominant and recessive genes, Bateson expanded his work to found the science of genetics. In 1908 a new professorship in biology was created at Cambridge University, devoted to the study of heredity and the expansion of Mendel's theory. Bateson, as it's first professors, gave this lecture to inaugurate the position and introduce the University to the underlying principles genetic theory.
