While working in the Koch Laboratory, Behring demonstrated that the serum of animals immunized against attenuated diphtheria toxins can be used as a preventive or therapeutic inoculation against diphtheria in other animals. In 1901, von Behring was the first recipient of the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his discovery of the fundamental principle of an antitoxic serum containing a natural antidote against a biological poison.
