With 11 coloured lithographed plates. Original green cloth; an exceptionally fine and clean copy in a morocco clamshell case. Presentation copy, inscribed by Mrs. Addison., First edition of one of the great rarities in the history of medicine, and the foundation of modern endocrinology. Addison describes supra-renal syndrome and pernicious anemia for the first time, and suggests that the existence of anemia together with the disease of the supra-renal was not a coincidence. G&M, 3864.Provenance: The gilt ornament on the front cover of our copy reads Presented by Mrs. Addison and is inscribed on the front endpaper, presumably by her, To Dr. Lonsdale one of the Author's best and kind friends. Dr. Lonsdale, a physician to the Cumberland Infirmary wrote a book entitled, The Worthies of Cumberland (1873), which contains a 12-page memoir of Addison.
