ROERICH, Nikolai

Sobranie sochineniy. (Collected Works Volume I).

Description

Octavo, 334pp. First edition of this volume of papers on history and art along with some stories by the important Russian artist, member of the Mir Iskussiva, the movement founded by Diagliev, to whose Ballet Russes Roerich would contribute designs. His work is inspired by the folklore of Oriental Russia, reflecting the brilliance and the barbarism of the East. This copy inscribed by Roerich on 30 March 1914. The inscription consists of two lines of Roerich's verse: From beautiful ancient stones the stairs of the future we are building. A certificate of authenticity on the letterhead of the Russian State East Museum from 15 May 1966 is tipped in. It states the following: The inscription and signature of Nikolai Roerich are authentic, signed by the head of the Roerich Memorial Room of the museum. The present example is rendered especially precious by the addition of the reproductions of paintings by Roerich excised from the early twentieth century periodicals. Some shelf wear but overall about very good in publisher's quarter calf and printed paper-covered boards.
