METCHNIKOFF, ELIE Lecons sur la pathologie comparee de l;inflammation faites a l'Institut Pasteur en Avril et Mai 1891. Paris G. Masson 1892

8vo. Original issue in publisher's wrappers. xi, 239 p. + 65 figures in the text and 3 colored platesat end. This is a very good copy of a major work by Metchnikoff.

Provenance: Presentation copy, inscribed on half title page, "A Monseur le Docteur Lancereaux homage de l'auteur." Lancereaux was noted for his work on syphilis and the first to definitely claim a causal relationship between leisons of the pancreas and diabetes (G&M 2943).In April and May 1891 Metchnikoff gave at the Pasteur Institute his classical lectures on the pathology of inflammation in which he dealt with the history of the various theories of inflammation and their investigation, and chiefly with the role of phagocytes in the animal kingdom. The lectures, which gave his views a wide dissemination, were attended by Pasteur. According to Garrison-Morton, the lectures were first published in Russian in 1892 and translated into French in the same year. However, as the lectures were delivered in French at Paris, it seems possible that the present French edition has priority. Metchnikoff shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine with Ehrlich in 1908 for their researches illuminating the understanding of immunity. (Garrison-Morton, 2307; Bulloch, Hist. Of Bacteriology, p. 260; Waller 6413; DSB IX. 334)
