1st Edition. 4to (24.2 x 19.7 cm). Contemporary calf. Collation: [8], 934, [26, Index] Includes folding portrait as frontis piece. Title in red and black ink along with central vignet. The binding has raised bands on spine with no label; retangular central design on covers, wear to edges and broken leather along hinges, cords intact and strong, ends of spine with minor loss. Edges in red with Sylvius in ink on fore edge. The portrait has a small (4.5 cm) tear at the lower right corner near stub that was repaired on verso. Text is very clean. Contents include: Disputationum medicarum I-X. - De methodo mendendi, liber II. - Praxeos medicae idea nova, liber III [&] Appendix. - Opuscula varia.

This work was published seven years after Le Boe’s death. He was physician, physicolgist, chemist and teacher in Leiden who greatly influenced students in Europe. (Heirs…1990) . Sylvius was noted for his findings tuberculosis where he “asserted that tuercles are often to be found in the lung and that they softened and suppurated to form cavities” (G&M, 2321) and anatomy of the brain where he desctibe the lateral cerebral fissure which was given his name, i.e., the fissure of Sylvius (G & M, 1377.3) (Garrison & Morton, 2321; Heirs of Hippocrates, 502; Krivatsky, 6724; Waller 9428).
