Collation: 4 leaves, 690 p. + 10 plates (8 folding, 1 in color) and text illustrations. Contemporary half red morocco with gilt labeling and decorations. Ex Libris with stamp of Collège de France on title pages. First edition for both articles. Helmholtz’s study on the mechanism of the tympanum and ossicles of the middle ear which did much to eleucidate the phenomenon of audition. It includes a description of ‘Helmholtz’s ligament’ of the malleus.” (G-M, 1563-English translation 1874; Heirs, 1888). The Bernstein article introduced the differential rheotome, and the first electrocardiograms were obtained with it by Marchand. (G-M 819.1 & 823.1). There is also a number of articles by Eduard F. W. Pflüger, particularly Ueber die Ursache der Athembewegungen, sowie der Dyspnoë. (p. 61-106) (G-M 940).

In addition both volumes contain other papers by Bernstein, Pflüger, Exner, Donders et al., many of which concern subjects relevant to the history of electrophysiology. (DSB VI, p.241; NDB VIII, p.500, Poggendorf III, p.611).
