BATESON, WILLIAM. METHODS AND SCOPE OF GENETICS. An Inaugural Lecture Delivered 23 October 1908. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1908

1st edition. 8vo, Original red cloth binding. Collation: [Blank], [6], 49 [1] p. This is a very good to fine copy with gilt title and author on spine and front board. Small with mark and a few spots in rear cover. Pencil signature of H. J. Welch on front free end paper. There are several passages marked by pencil line or underlining and one set of notations (p.17), presumably those of Mr. Welch.

Following his extensive initial work on heredity and Mendel’s early research of which an English translation appeared in the first edition of Batesons book on Principles of Heredity, Bateson went to Cambridge University. The present work is his inaugural lecture for his endowed chair in biology for “promotion of inquiries into the physiology of Heredity and Variation, a study now spoken of as Genetics.” (Preface). This is a scarce copy of a seminal lecture by Bateson.
