Illustrated with numerous figures and drawings throughout the text. Original green cloth binding with title, author, vol., and publisher in gilt on spine, top and bottom of which have gilt decoration. Ends of spine Vol. I frayed, hinges partly frayed. Corners of both volumes are rubbed and bumped with some loss of cloth. Book plate of Swedish book collector, Thorne Virgin, on front pastedowns dated 1911. Thorne’s signature, place and date (London 29-4- 1910) of purchase (?) on verso of front free end paper of both volumes. Inner hinges strengthened.

Scarce second issue of this classic work with first use of the word ‘evolution’. (Freeman, 937; Casey Wood, p. 310).
