HEDWIG, JOANNE. THEORIA GENERATIONIS ET FRUCTIFICATIONIS PLANTARUM CRYPTOGAMICARUM LINNAEI … PETERSBURG: Academiae Imper. Scientiarum, 1784

1st edition. 4to. Contemporary red morocco. Raised bands and panels on spine with gilt floral patterns and separate black leather title in gilt. Covers with single gilt border. All edges gilt. Very clean and bright copy. Collation:164p. + 37 engraved plates in contemporary color. First three plates with damp staining on upper right third.

This is one of Hedwig’s major works discussing his theories on the generation and fruiting of mosses, liverworts and mushrooms and equisetum. Although he missed the aspect of spores in mushrooms coming from the gills for new plants, his critical analysis of morphology of the different plant groups and their progeny is noteworthy.
